Overview

Alamo Inn B&B is the optimal location for avid birdwatchers. Located in Alamo, TX, we are in the middle of the richest birding in the country.

Join us to experience Texas’s best birding: neo-tropical migrants, tropical specialties, wintering temperate species (including Whooping Cranes), resident temperate species, and rarities, plus butterflies and other wildlife. Scheduled tours in small groups run spring (late April), fall (late November), and winter (late December to early March).

Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

We provide nature tourism marketing support to local birding destinations by promoting them at birding events in Europe and US, such as the British Birdfair, where we have exhibited annually as volunteers since 2002. We serve on many different conservation oriented boards, including Friends groups. Currently we serve on the board of Texas Birding, a non-profit nature tourism co-op. Provide advice to many birding destinations. Work to open new habitat to birders and conservation by helping them make their destination economically viable and giving their land value as a nature tourism destination.

We support economic research in nature tourism to demonstrate its value to local communities. We partner with historic buildings to appeal to birders and to offer services such as accommodation to birders. Part of our hotel is a historic building. We provide recycling for our guests. We have not built any buildings, but all our buildings are themselves repurposed old buildings.

How does the tour support local people?

We support local people by training and employing local residents who are starting out as guides, employing local guides. We purchase art, craft, and photographic work from local people for display and resale. We provide birding education for local groups, including schools. We work to support habitat conservation on private land and support activities to acquire more public land for bird conservation.

We employ poor local people to provide food service, housekeeping, and maintenance at our hotel and we train them to improve their future prospects. We pay 50% above minimum wage and work with guests and clients to provide tips in addition to their pay. We support good quality local restaurants on the tours to give our clients local flavors and culture and to support local enterprise which employs local people.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

Our tours include history, natural history, and current information on conservation of habitat and species in the areas covered by each tour provided by our company manager and by our guides. We also utilize local experts to provide information and commentary on local regions and areas as we travel. We provide printed materials for our clients that are educational. We have a birding information center and book, map and gear store attached to our hotel.

My most memorable moment was the “fall” at South Padre Island on the first weekend of the tour. The trees were dripping with colourful warblers, buntings, vireos, etc. I didn’t know which direction to look!

The work that Keith Hackland put into making all aspects of the tour memorable really stood out. The Alamo Inn was like a home away from home and the two birding guides were both excellent.

If you’re considering this tour, go on it. I had read an article extolling the merits of the Lower Rio Grande Valley and indeed it was a memorable trip. Spacious, comfortable accommodation, excellent guiding and good value.
