Chocolate-backed Kingfishers

Overview

Our Uganda birding tour will continue to Kibale National Park, a large block of rain forest that offers great birding and harbors the highest concentration of primates in East Africa with over 300 bird species and opportunity of tracking Chimpanzees. We will then proceed to Queen Elizabeth national park known for its varied biodiversity and over 600 bird species. Our highlight will be the Bwindi impenetrable forest which has a record of 23 of Uganda’s 24 Albertine Rift endemics and an opportunity to do a gorilla trek. Our birding safari will end with Mgahinga National Park which is the smallest national Park in Uganda hosting over 180 bird species including the Albertine Rift Endemics.

Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

Trainings to tour guides through the Uganda Safari guides Association. We take clients to community run projects where we pay to visit the sites like wetlands and pockets of forests.

Kagera Safaris ensures that all our tour guides attend the training offered by the Uganda Safari Guides Association especially the ones done in the national parks. We are also corporate members of the guides association.

How does the tour support local people?

We use local site guides in every area we visit. We also arrange for community visits where clients are interested. More info from email conversation with Kristi: We take clients to Bigodi wetland which is a community run conservation project for birding and community experiences.

We also arrange home-stays for clients in villages near the parks for those interested. This way the hosts earn a bit of income from hosting and the clients enjoy experiencing authentic experiences in the host family.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

Our tour guides are knowledgeable sharing environmental education along the way.

The sighting of several Shoebill and the Gorilla encounter were magical moments! Perfect organization, quick answering and a deep knowledge of the country, the accommodation, the tours and other facilities were great. Try Kagera Safaris – you will be more than impressed.
