Overview

This tour is designed to showcase the best of Trinidad. Compared to our classic 10-Day, 2-Island Classic Tour, it is more flexible in pace, with options to pursue your interests, be they birding, butterflies, photography, or simply relaxing in a tropical setting (and let the birds come to you). It is ideal for returning guests, or for couples or friends with diverse interests. It also fits well into a calendar week, great for those with limited time. Two fine lodges are featured for variety.

First and foremost, you stay at the Asa Wright Nature Centre (AWNC), enjoying the famous verandah and venturing off the grounds to see the Scarlet Ibis at Caroni National Park and scenic mountain terrain of the surrounding Northern Range. If you are keen on birding, there are opportunities for optional fieldtrips farther away, such as the full-day outing to Nariva Swamp. Avid photographers may hire a photography expert (subject to availability).

After five nights at AWNC, spend your last two nights at a boutique, beachfront lodge on Trinidad’s northern coast, where lush forests provide a stronghold for the endangered Trinidad Piping-Guan. In addition to the Piping-Guan, from March to July the beach is ideal for viewing nesting Leatherback Turtles (and later in the season you can witness the hatchlings emerging).

Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

All our Trinidad tours are based out of and strongly support the Asa Wright Nature Centre, the first non-profit nature centre in the Caribbean (50 years old in 2017). Funds from tours help support land purchase and conservation on the Centre’s protected habitat. Boat trips to see Scarlet Ibis flying by the thousands to their evening roost support mangrove preservation. On this tour, we also visit the world’s densest congregation of nesting Leatherback Sea Turtle at Grand Riviere and a portion of tour fees go to conservation of the turtle’s nesting site and a rehab center located next door to our hotel. And we visit a local community called Brasso Seco for a locally prepared lunch and special demonstration about the community-supported chocolate production – from growing cocoa bean to producing (and purchasing) locally produced chocolate – through a collective that supports families throughout Brasso Seco.

How does the tour support local people?

All guides are highly trained local Trinidadian naturalists, and all Trinidad tours also support the facilities that train and employ them. Tour fees also directly fund local businesses and nonprofits in Grand Riviere, Brasso Seco and the Arima Valley.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

Field trips at and from the Center incorporate many educational elements, regarding birds, animals, insects, agriculture, native species, and impacts of development.
