Overview

The Birdwatchers expedition is one of the programs Inotawa gives in the Tambopata National Reserve (RNTAM) and its Buffer Zone (ZA). These are excellent places to watch a huge diversity of birds in their daily activities looking for minerals in colpas (clay licks) all along the rivers (Tambopata, Chuncho and La Torre), among which are the Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna), Scarlet Macaw (Ara Macao), Red-and-green Macaw (Ara chloroptera), Chestnut-fronted Macaw (Ara Severa), Red-bellied Macaw and Red-shouldered Macaw (A. nobilis), as well as Mealy Amazon Parrot, Yellow-crowned Amazon (Ara ochrocephala) and Blue-headed Parrot, among others. You can check the list of endemic species here.

The reserve and its buffer zone is also a site of passage for more than 40 species of migratory birds like Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus) and White-rumped Swallow (Leucorrhoa tachycineta), among others.

The presence of manchales of bamboo (Guadua weberbaueri) houses rare and interesting species such as the Peruvian Recurvebill (Syndactyla ucayalae), Manu Antbird (Cercomacra manu), Rufous-headed Woodpecker (Celeus spectabilis), Flammulated Pygmy-Tyrant (Hemitriccus flammulatus) and many more. All in the Tambopata jungle of Madre de Dios, Peru.

Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

With this tour we give sponsorship to our projects:

  • Wildlife surveys and forest inventories
  • Recovery of the Taricaya turtle population in Tambopata River (REPTTA)
  • Monitoring large mammals (camera traps)
  • Fungi and fungal cultivation research
  • Reforestation
  • Endangered birds (Garza Agami)
  • Microscopic surveys
  • Organic orchard
  • Native species reforestation

Plus many of our tours include reforestation activities.

How does the tour support local people?

We give work to many of our local people as tour guides, as eco families who we visit to learn about their activities and way of living, and as providers of some of our products.

Together we created the Association of Residents of La Torre for Ecotourism and Sustainable Use of Tambopata (1999), as a means of community organization to make enterprises in conservation, education and culture viable, both financially and administratively. Today the association has taken the name of UPYF (Uniting People and Forest Fragments). They look after of all the lakes and attractions and receive a fee per guest for their support.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

All of our expeditions receive an exposition of the videos recorded in our camera traps set in the area; in this show we share a a bit of knowledge about the animals and their habitats.

For the local guides we give them yearly educational updates as ecotourist guides and first aid knowledge.

Do you provide any additional conservation, community or educational benefits through your wider operations that you’d like to mention?

At the moment we are finishing implementation of a fungus orchard dedicated to the study, production and ways to consume this protein of the future.

Also we do monthly workshops for the women of the area to learn to make their own organic cleaning personal products with plants and oils that they can get in the area.

We also have agreements with local and overseas universities to receive thesis students and volunteers to conduct their research at our lodge.

We are still developing the fungi project, the Agami rescue study, the orchard development, and plan to extend to a program with local children with art and music to develop their love for the land and encourage them to remain in the area rather than moving to the cities.
