Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

We make donations to several Panamenian conservation associations: ANCON (National Asociation for the Conservation of Nature), Fundación Avifauna Eugene Eisemann (administrates the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center in Gamboa), ADESVA (Asociation for the Sustainable Development of El Valle de Antón) and have donated to Cornell in the past.

We bring water to our clients so they can refill their water bottles and avoid the use of plastic bottles

Our lodges do not offer air-conditioned rooms, so they are environmentally friendly

Most of our light bulbs are energy-saving compact fluorescents, saving 80% over conventional incandescent bulbs

Our toilets only use 1.6 gallons per flush, compared to the typical 5 gallons

Linens and towels are not changed daily, except by request

Water from showers and washbasins (grey water) is reused in the gardens

How does the tour support local people?

All our tour-guides, kitchen and transportation and office staff are local people.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

Our birding & nature tours are an educational experience per se since our professional bilingual guides, bring up information of all species seen and their natural history. Also, we take great care to educate our guests about our efforts to conserve water and energy, and invite them to join in this endeavor. It is our sincere hope our guests will join us in applying some of these principles to their daily lives.

Do you provide any additional conservation, community or educational benefits through your wider operations that you’d like to mention?

We are a proud member of Pack for a Purpose, a responsible tourism initiative that allows travelers to make a lasting impact in the community at your travel destination. If you save just a few kilos of space in your suitcase and take supplies for the projects we support in need, visitors make a priceless impact in the lives of local children and families. For more information go to https://www.packforapurpose.org/. We also make donations to national and international birding entities.
