Overview

Join Naturalist Journeys on a spectacularly wild adventure tour to Guyana, South America’s hidden gem. This unspoiled wilderness, off the radar for many travelers, offers an incredible experience — birds and mammals abound! The substrate here is the ancient granitic Guianan Shield, which, along with the Brazilian Shield to the south of the Amazon River, forms the primeval geologic heart of the South American continent.

Tropical rainforest has been growing here for millions of years, slowly adapting to changing soil conditions as nutrients leached from the soils. Today Guyana still holds unending forest, myriad rivers, and expansive savannah. This Guyana nature tour also takes time to explore the vibrant, multi-cultural urban center at Georgetown, and its well-known botanic gardens.

Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

We are committed to responsible travel and eco-tourism. Where possible, we employ locally, use environmentally-sound lodges, and stray from the beaten track. We work tirelessly to ensure that our trips benefit the communities in which we travel, and our funds assist local conservation efforts. Each year, a portion of fees paid goes to support local conservation projects through responsible, qualified carbon offset funds, this year supporting projects through Stand for Trees and the Carbonfund.

How does the tour support local people?

Our local partner is a representative of an Amerindian community of Makushi people, we stay in locally owned and operated lodges, and our US hosts complement the skills and expertise of local guides.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

We relish the art of nature travel, savoring our experience with each creature and landscape, while enjoying the camaraderie of like-minded travelers. And although birds are our specialty, natural history, scenic appreciation, culture, and geology play a strong role in all of our travels.
