Overview

Animals’ activities, along with meteorological and ecological data, let scientists know what is going on with the environment and indicate early warning signs of serious climate change. We study several mammal species in our private reserve using camera traps, bat nets, and sand traps to capture animal tracks. Students and volunteers participate in the ongoing research, one-on-one with on-site biologists. Groups are divided among different activities, such as data collection, to be part of the ongoing research.

Environmental educational programs at Veragua Rainforest include:

– Study of several mammal species in our private reserve using camera traps, bat nets, and sand traps to capture animal tracks.

– Study of amphibians and reptiles on-site to show how the variables of temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, and moon luminosity are affecting species. These investigations tie in with ongoing research over the past six years.

– Habitat restoration on-site for two species in danger of extinction: Tiger Frogs and Lemur Leaf Frogs. This is an ongoing project for many years.

– Sounds of the Rainforest guided walks to learn and understand the different songs of birds and amphibians, which help in gauging the health of animal populations in the region.

– Bird watching to identify species in the region. Costa Rica has the greatest density of bird species in North and Central America, and a record number of 417 bird species have been identified in the Central Caribbean region. At Veragua we have identified 364 types of birds, which represent 20% of the 920 species of birds found in Costa Rica.

– Study of fruit-eating butterflies with traps located at different altitudes to see how environmental changes affect migration patterns and reproduction.

– Owl and Insect Night Hike: See a unique perspective of Veragua Rainforest Eco-Adventure at night! Experience the rich sounds and unusual visuals of the rainforest at dark as we venture out onto the trails with our expert biologist. With nearly every step, students will discover nocturnal frogs, colorful insects, snakes, and even nocturnal mammals such as the opossum or the kinkajou. Another fun activity for students is to identify the different characteristics of nocturnal insects and moths with the on-site entomologist.

– Peje School Community Work: Located 2 miles from the Veragua Rainforest Eco-Adventure entrance, the Peje School is our local elementary school. Volunteers will interact with the school children on such activities as: maintenance projects, English tutoring, tree planting and singing local songs with them.

– Butterfly Garden Volunteer Work: Volunteers will be split into small groups to work on activities such as:

  • Butterfly garden maintenance: leaves, eggs and wings collection
  • Pupa Box maintenance: includes species selection, cleaning the boxes after the butterflies are released
  • Pupa selection and setting
  • Butterfly garden feeding
  • Seed planting at Butterfly Garden

Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

For the past 10 years, Veragua Rainforest founders have worked with local communities to improve residents’ quality of life with new jobs and provide education in environmental conservation. During the two years of park construction, Veragua hired 140 men from the local area, many of whom stayed on working at the park in maintenance and grounds keeping.

Through the Veragua Foundation for Education & Rainforest Research, Veragua Rainforest helps the school and children at the local Las Brisas de Veragua Elementary School and La Union de Rio Peje Elementary School with school supplies and school improvements and maintenance.

Learn more about the Veragua Foundation for Rainforest Research.

How does the tour support local people?

For over nine years, Veragua Rainforest Eco-Adventure Park has worked hand-in-hand with local communities to improve residents’ lives. Learn more here.

In 2018 Veragua Rainforest launched a new Sustainability Tour that gives visitors a hands-on experience of authentic Costa Rican culture, the opportunity to interact with the local community, meet indigenous Cabecar artisans, learn about global sustainability on the grassroots level, and help counteract climate change with rainforest conservation. Learn more here.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

Visit the Veragua Rainforest website for detailed information about their Educational Program as well as their Sustainability Tour.

About Company

The Veragua Rainforest began in 2004 as the initiative of a group of young Costa Rican entrepreneurs who believed in conservation, and who decided to create a nature experience with world-class service but with a very low environmental impact.  They bet on the development of the Province of Limón, with the goal of promoting tourism in the historically poor province--  and with an objective to help transform the area into a leading destination in the Caribbean.

They formed and led a group of capable and committed individuals, earned the trust of organizations, authorities, lenders and investors, and persevered in spite of countless challenges along the way. After more than four years of hard work, the Veragua Rainforest opened its doors on July 4th, 2008.

The Veragua Rainforest is a Costa Rican company that passionately believes in conservation. From the start, we set out to create a unique nature experience to immerse visitors in the rainforest in an unparalleled setting, and to bring sustainable development opportunities to surrounding communities.

Veragua Rainforest Eco-Adventure retains local talent as its team members and is one of the larger employers in the Province of Limon.  Our training programs, including English language classes and scientific training, enable our team members to work in an environment of growth and realization of their potential.  Repeat visitors find that many employees are long-term Veragua team members, having been with us since the very beginning and committed to conservation.

Mission: To offer each visitor the best tropical rainforest experience in the Caribbean, with the highest quality of service, along with a firm commitment to support the development of our local communities and to promote education, research, and respect for the environment.

Vision: To be a worldwide model for tourist attractions in terms of conservation, research, and sustainability.
