Overview

With this 4in1 combo tour you will be able to experience in the easiest way, without having to rush through the day, 4 of the travellers favorite places such as the river, the waterfall, the volcano and hot springs, who knew you could do it all in a day?

The Arenal area is so beautiful and offers so many amazing adventures and places to explore but we know that not all travelers have enough time to go through all of what they want, that is why we were able to come up with this terrific combo that helps you not only visit the most amazing highlights of Arenal in one day but also is wallet friendly!

The day will start early, right after breakfast where you will meet our friendly guide at the lobby of your hotel and will drive you to the first destination, Peñas Blancas River to get started on the Safari Float. This is an adventure for everybody, from the little ones to the oldies, it does not require any physical condition since you will be sitting on a raft while it goes smoothly flowing down the river while the guide teaches you about the rainforest (where you will be at) and will point out at so many wonderful animals that can be seen as well as wonderful trees, flowers, lizards and birds. In the middle of the way you will stop at a nice side of the river to have some sweet snacks, water and tropical fruits of the season.

The journey has just begun and you will want more! This time we will be heading towards the amazing La Fortuna Waterfall which is a tall, 75 meters (240 ft) fall right in the middle of a canyon in the rainforest, this is an amazing experience that you cannot miss, you can walk down to the waterfall for about 20 minutes and 500 stairs and get to jump in the water, get this amazing feeling that comes when you are so close to nature, swim and take amazing photos!

500 stairs may sound intimidating, but is not like that, the trails are really well made and you can go slowly, at your own pace while admiring the nature around you, or if can’t make it all the way down because of a hip or a knee problem you can remain upstairs and stay at the observatory point so you can watch the waterfall from above, enjoy the facilities, bathrooms, restaurant and wait for the rest of the group.

It’s about noon and we are ready to take you to a beautiful family ranch in the surrounding of the river to have a tasteful lunch! La Familia Rodriguez will greet you and invite you to have a meal that you will not forget, a very traditional taste of our culture, always in the company of nature while making new friends, seeing animals and having a nice cup of coffee too!

It was a deserved, relaxed, different lunch experience and now is time to head towards one of the most beautiful trails of the magnificent Arenal Volcano, Pay close attention to your guide, he will tell you all about the volcano history, the explosions it used to make, all about the recovery of the town and how the rainforest became part of it, open your eyes and ears, it is very likely that you find some animals on the way as well. This is not a strenuous hike, it takes about 2.5 hours to complete but it also goes at a slow pace as needed so you can get the feeling of what is like to be around the volcano and seeing its fascinating perfect cone shape from so close and all that it means to the Costa Rican nature.

The sun almost sets now and we know what is just the perfect way to end this perfect day… let’s go and relax with the magic of the natural hot springs pools of Eco Termales! Here you will have time to explore the beautiful, secluded gardens and go through the pools while a river of hot water flows between them, have a drink or two and get ready to taste a really nice dinner before heading back to the hotel.

Has been a memorable day, filled with joy and nature and we know that is a great feeling! You are now ready to rest in your hotel and dream about all the wonderful things you saw and experienced this day.

Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

We promote the annual cleaning at Penas Blancas river, and we are starting a reforestation program at the boarder of the same river. We also participate in cleaning programs at the community promoted by other companies in the area.

How does the tour support local people?

Our co workers at the local ranch are from the neighborhood. We also collaborate on the social programs and activities at our community that help to develop the infrastructure and education locally.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

At our local ranch, we explain our local meals cooked on wood stove using traditional cooking methods, guests can make tortillas with us too. The guides always explain travellers the importance for conservation practices in the country and the community, as well as we drive around local towns and explain how school works in Costa Rica.

Certificates

We do have certifications for participating on local programs to preserve the earth such planting trees and cleaning programs. And we are in the process to be certified by Costa Rican Tourism Board with the CST (Certification for Sustainable Tourism) working on it but its a long process, we are in the middle of it and proving that we do sustainable practices.

Top 5 achievements

1. Recycling at all our centers (operations, office, ranch)

2. Very good maintenance of the vehicles to make them very efficient and control gases

3. Support local farmers by buying their products instead of buying at the chain supermarkets

4. Using biodegradable cleaning products

5. Replacing 50% plastic water bottles to reusable bottles. This is a program that we handle to offer a beautiful metal bottle to refill water along the tours, the bottles are offered to the guests at the same cost that we get them, so the idea is not to make profit of it but to encourage people to avoid the plastic bottle along the tours and use this bottle all along the other tours, the bottle says: "I contributed to preserve the Earth".

What new sustainability steps or initiatives do you plan to take next?

After the cleanings at Penas Blancas river we are promoting the program to reforest the boarders, this is a huge thing for us as it involves a lot of work, effort, donations , permissions, and of course it means a huge change for the biodiversity around the river.

We are also planting our own products such pineapple that we use for snacks on the tour, pineapple plantations are one of the most damaging plantations on earth because of the chemicals used, we are planting them organic to avoid buying them, we also plant cassava, plantains, cacao, and and organic garden for all we need on our salads and species.
