If you want to see something uniquely different, full of beauty, nature, and wildlife….. this is the tour for you. The Mangrove ecosystem is filled with life and riveting beauty. Immerse yourself into this amazing tropical environment by Kayak or Stand Up Paddle Board. As we drive up to the Matapalo Mangroves, we take our time to stop to see all the incredible wildlife that might greet us along the way. Then, as we get into the mellow waters, the guide takes you slowly through the enchanting estuaries, where you can see and learn about the plants and animals that live there. The river is very calm, allowing an amateur paddler to enjoy the water, without getting tired or scared. Our knowledgeable guides will take you to explore lush estuaries and ever-changing rivers, taking you away from the hot sun and dusty roads.  The birds and animals thrive in this sanctuary, so this tour is great for BIRD WATCHERS.

Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

Community Carbon Trees (Local Reforestation/Education to combat Carbon Emissions), Asociacion Programas Sociales de Dominical (Recycling center and Beach Clean Up), Costa Ballena Lifeguards

How does the tour support local people?

All of our employees are Locals from the area. We also offer free tours for Locals in the Costa Ballena.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

All of our tours are educational, but our Mangrove Nature Tour is the perfect educational tour. Not only do you learn about the wildlife in the mangroves, but you also learn about the incredible and extremely important Mangrove Eco-System.

Certificates

We have won the Luxury Travel Awards for Tour Operator of the Year in Costa Rica 2018 and Water Sports Company of the Year for Costa Rica in 2017.
We are also ICT (Instituto Costarricense de Turismo) certified. We are in the process of applying for our CST (el Certificado para la Sostenibilidad Turistica).

Top 5 achievements

1. We support Community Carbon Trees to erase our Carbon Emissions.

2. We do not hand out 1 time use plastic water bottles. We provide water before and after the tours and suggest people to bring their own water bottles.

3. We do not use 1 time use plastic bags. All of our garbages are brought to a large bin in the back, where we collect and bring the main garbage can when ready.

4. We use sensor lights and timers for our night time lighting so employees who are staying late don't have to worry about turning them off.

5. All of our guides/employees are required to collect garbage on every tour and to regularly participate in the recycling program in Dominical.

What new sustainability steps or initiatives do you plan to take next?

We are creating a rain water collector to utilize when washing our equipment.
