Overview

An overdose of wild nature that includes mangrove exploration, a remote bird sanctuary and snorkelling at Caño Island.

The snorkeling tour starts at the river town of Sierpe. We will first tour the mangrove forest of the Rio Sierpe basin, where we can spot crocodiles, macaws, sloths and snakes.

We will then cross to the open sea in front of Drake Bay, where we can spot dolphins and seabirds hunting. Caño Island will be our main destination: here we will do some snorkeling, have our lunch and touch land for a visit at the ranger station to learn about the island’s indigenous history.

After that we’ll make our way back to Sierpe through the Islas Violines bird sanctuary via Guarumal, a magical and remote assembly of rocks that host a colony of hundreds of different seabirds.

You will join an experience defined by a fun and educational approach and every stop and every animal encountered will be an occasion to share knowledge and facts about the environment and its fragile beauty.

Includes:

  • PADI Pro snorkelling leader
  • Snorkel gear and all boat safety equipment, life vests included
  • Home made lunch and snacks
  • Boat ride
  • Caño island, Mangrove & Bird Sanctuary tour
  • Whale watching or dolphin watching (seasonal)
  • Itinerant conservation workshop: the end of the line, how to take care of the ocean, help and engage, fun facts and more

Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

All our tours have conservation as their main point, we teach our customers about marine conservation, we take them to beach cleanups, we arrange workshops on recycling, plastic contamination and more.

How does the tour support local people?

All our tours involve only local captains and boat owners, independent local park guides, we give free talks to local schools about conservation

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

During every tour we hold numerous workshops with the purpose of educating people on several environmental topics, from shark consumption and fishing to biodegradable alternatives to plastic, sustainable food products, environmentalism and awareness, how to contribute to ecological associations and movements and more.

Top 5 achievements

1. Banned use of plastic during our trips
2. Commit people to do at least 5 minutes of cleanup every time they go to the beach after our tours
3. Commit people to stop consuming shark products
4. Make local fish supplier to stop buying and selling shark meat
5. Make local supermarket chain to stop selling shark meat

What new sustainability steps or initiatives do you plan to take next?

We plan to rally together the biggest musicians and activists of Costa Rica to create a social media and live event awareness campaign to highlight the problem of shark fishing in the country, with the aim to eventually form a group big enough to march in the streets of the capital and make a strong statement to the government of Costa Rica in provision of the court appeal, due January 2021, on the requested inclusion of all sharks into the protected species category and therefore ban any shark fishing activity in the country's waters.
