Overview

The first stop will be at a hidden gem, the magnificent Llanos Del Cortez Waterfall, surrounded by a sandy, gold-speckled beach and lush rainforest, where you can swim and relax.

After this we will drive for 45 minutes to enjoy a typical lunch with a beautiful view of the Miravalles Volcano. Then, located on the slopes of the Tenorio Volcano, we will enjoy a nature walk through the rainforest with many stops to see the variety of flora and fauna, including two-towed and three-toed sloths, in the surrounding tropical rain forest.

This is an excellent opportunity for observing birds, butterflies, frogs, monkeys, orchids, and become immersed in the splendour of the tropical jungle.

Duration: Full Day

Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

We work with a local family in the small town of Bijagua, Alajuela, Costa Rica. 30 years ago, their land was used to farm a variety of produce such as macadamia nuts, tropical flowers, bananas and coffee. However, due to increased pressure to use pesticides and destroy more forest for agriculture, the family decided to turn the land into a nature reserve and provide eco education for tourists.

Our guests learn about the primary and secondary rain forest as well as the plants and animals that live there. On this tour, guests will see and learn about wildlife such as sloths, monkeys, birds, porcupines, butterflies and bees, reptiles, frogs, and snakes and so much more. We work with a local biologist to not only get close to nature, but educate our clients about the how they can help protect it.

This tour is great for people and families of all ages. The trails are easy to walk and not overly strenuous. Our best feedback is when our clients learn something new and change their mental perspectives for the better.

How does the tour support local people?

The family we work with in Bijagua have been local farmers for generations. The father, Marvin, decided 30 years ago to switch from farming to eco education.

We also hire local tour guides and drivers for our tours. We stop during our tours to buy fruit and coconuts from local fruit stands and also support the town of Bagaces, Guanacaste when we visit the waterfall there, as all entry fees are donated to the local school.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

On the tour, guests will be guided by a local biologist who will educate then about the plants and animals they are seeing in the rainforest. They also explain the history of the land as well as teaching them about the need to protect the forest and what they can do to help.

Certificates

We have 15 years of experience in tourism in Costa Rica and have gained a positive reputation in our area as well as online (trip advisor, Facebook etc.) We follow all the rules and regulations and hold all the permits necessary by the Costa Rican government.

Top 5 achievements

1. Educating our guests and children is, in our opinion, the best way to increase sustainability for the future.

2. We do not use plastic water bottles or plastic straws and also try to minimize all waste on our tours.

3. We do not support any local businesses that promote the hands on interaction with wildlife and also report them to the local government. There are many places that promote holding a sloth or baby monkey. We report these places and try to educate people not to support them as well.

4. On our ocean and snorkelling tours, we educate our guests on the importance of respecting the reef. Never take any "souvenirs" such as sea shells, coral, etc.

5. Green house gas emissions. It may be a small gesture, but our drivers sometimes have to wait for hours while the tour is in progress. Many drivers will sit in the van with the engine running and the AC on. We have talked to our drivers and informed them that this is not good practice and instead encourage them to wait at a restaurant and have something to eat instead.
