Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

We do organic farming which promotes lots of biodiversity in the farm, preserving the ecosystems within and around the coffee. We also promote the use of coffee byproducts and reduce the water used in the process.

How does the tour support local people?

Doing organic farming is more difficult. So we require more hand labor instead of chemicals to make it possible.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

We educate our workers about the importance of good practices of organic farming and our tours are more than 50% educational for our visitors. We teach them all the problems that coffee farming can have on nature to make them more responsible consumers.

Top 5 achievements

1. Not using chemicals for over 25 years on the farm.

2. Using our coffee fruits for wine making by reducing the water in the process. From 100 litters of water per cup of coffee to 1 litter of water for every 500 cups that get processed.

3: Reforesting 100% of the farm with over 100 species of native trees.

4. Selling our coffee locally instead of exporting (exportation increase carbon dioxide emissions).

5. Reducing the erosion problems we had when we were using monocultures. This is by natural terraces instead of tilling. We also use retention holes along the farm to reduce erosion to the minimum. Doing so, our water table gets more full while we reduce the overflows in our rivers.

What new sustainability steps or initiatives do you plan to take next?

Educate the community about what we can all do to improve our lives and the surroundings, giving free classes to our neighbors.

About Company

El Toledo coffee is a project that features coffee production in harmony with the environment. Here on the farm, we try to use natural resources to produce our organic coffee in a way that minimizes the impact on nature!  To be able to reach this objective it is necessary to make a lot of changes to a typical coffee plantation-changes that we have implemented over the years and are glad we did.
