Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

We collect important data on the whales, dolphins and sea turtles on every tour. This includes spatial and behaviour data as well as health data. We also carry hydrophones to record cetacean acoustics for analysis.

We give $1 from every tour to the World Cetacean Alliance.

We give $5 from every tour to the local NGO Osa Ecology who we collaborate with.

We promote responsible whale and dolphin watching and are currently in the process of leading the Golfo Dulce to becoming an internationally recognised Whale Heritage Site

How does the tour support local people?

We only contract local workers. We promote visits to local run businesses after the tour including gardens and restaurants. All fruit is brought from local farmers for the tours. Local residents invited for no charge on tours. We organize a free tour for students from the local schools and university four times a year.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

We organize a free tour for students from the local schools and university four times a year.

We collect scientific data on all tours.

We always have a biologist from the Costa Rica Cetacean Society on board (Free of charge).

We promote education to our guests explaining the importance of the wildlife here and the eco system. All tours are education focused.

Do you provide any additional conservation, community or educational benefits through your wider operations that you’d like to mention?

Only use quiet four stroke motors for minimal impact on the environment.

Full alignment with the cetacean regulations in Costa Rica.

No plastic bottles on board; we use a cooler.

No straws offered and when lunch is included there is no throw away plastic used.

We use super gas rather than diesel for less contamination.

We use only natural products for cleaning our boats.

We recycle trash collected.

We raise funds for conservation projects in the area by selling metal straw kits and to raise awareness.
