Highlights

The ultimate highlight is to play with the bioluminescent water

What looks like normal water in the dark will light up with sparkles at your touch

A peaceful nighttime paddle tour

Enjoy natures magic – as is!

Learn about the living glowing organisms

Overview

An ocean full of stars: Bioluminescent algae

This visible light made by living creatures is known as bioluminescence. Some bioluminescent organisms, – for example, the dinoflagellates produce a blue-green color light.  Their ecosystems are very rare, often found in warm-water lagoons with narrow openings to the sea.

In the Paquera Bay the bioluminescent plankton is so abundant that any disturbance such as a kayak, a fish or, as you will see from your kayak. Even a hand passing through the water can produce a shimmering light show.
There are living lights in the ocean, which you can experience right here.

Bioluminescent kayak tour overview

This incredible tour is peaceful and breathtaking, all at the same time. The kayak launch area is just a short distance from the Paquera ferry landing, and the calm gulf water is very accessible by kayak. Our enthusiastic guide ensures a safe and enjoyable kayaking tour.

We don’t let the day end when the sun goes down. At sunset, we gather under the palm trees overlooking the bio-bay for a welcome with complimentary refreshments. Our experienced guide, Luis gives a briefing of the tour. He will equip everyone with suitable life jackets and lead the way to the launch area for the kayaks. He is careful to help entering the kayaks and giving instructions to those that do not have kayaking experience. Everyone gets to do the full hour of the tour in their own kayak or a tandem kayak.

It’s like going on a cozy family tour, as the maximum group size is 10 persons including the guide. You stop along the way, where Luis will explain more about the magical glowing water and the marine life in the bay.

Upon the return to the Bahia Rica beach, we have fresh water and towels available, and bathroom facilities if needed.

The darker the night, the better the experience will be. Around full moon the light from the moon is so strong that it makes it harder to see the bioluminescence.

Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

In general we work with reforestation in this area, our fishing is strictly catch and release, and we are part of a fish tagging project and we're about to launch a kayak ocean cleaning initiative.

How does the tour support local people?

We hire only local guides, captains and other staff. We buy local products and support local artist. We also support the local primary school.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

Our guide on the bioluminescent kayak tour has certification in bioluminescence from Unversidad Latina. All our tours starts with an educational sequence, and also throughout the duration of the tour, a lot of insight in the bioluminescence and local area.

Top 5 achievements

  1. Creating jobs in an area with very few job opportunities
  2. Low carbon foot print providing a tour with kayaks only
  3. In an area with no organized garbage collection, establishing a recycling and garbage handling
  4. Cultural insight. Our tours are located in a rural non touristy village, with a healthy interaction between the tourists and the local community
  5. Consumption of local products and conservation of wildlife on land and on the water. We have a "observe and let live" policy for all wildlife.

What new sustainability steps or initiatives do you plan to take next?

Implementing a kayak ocean clean up initiative. We'll lend out our kayaks to anyone that volunteer to collect garbage/plastic from the ocean on a daily basis.
