Overview

Uganda is fast gaining fame as an incredible place to explore Africa, hosting a rich geography of wetlands, savannas, and montane rainforests associated with the Albertine Rift, a high plateau where Africa’s great rivers are born and 20+ endemic bird species may be found.

From the shores of Lake Victoria to the lush forests skirting the beautiful Virunga Volcanos, Uganda hosts both a rich bird and mammal fauna. It offers an excellent blend of the classic African safari with game drives, while the country retains some of the best forests remaining on the continent; these wild forest reserves are home to myriad beautiful birds, rare Mountain Gorilla, Chimpanzee, and other primates.

The Chimpanzee and Gorilla treks are optional, but highly recommended!

Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

Our funds paid toward the Mountain Gorilla trek permit go toward conservation of the population of Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi’s Impenetrable Forest National Park.

How does the tour support local people?

We stay in organization or community lodging, use local guides, bring school supplies to local children, and more. Additionally, we donated $600 to the women’s bird guide club to sponsor a trainee through certification and brought binoculars and a camera to donate to a trained guide.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

We visit villages and other locals to learn about about local culture and support the local people.

Do you provide any additional conservation, community or educational benefits through your wider operations that you’d like to mention?

We donate annually to the Carbon Fund program, as well as to other organizations on a case-by-case basis. In the beginning of 2019 we raised money for the Isle Royale Wolf Relocation project. Additionally, we support the Friends of Asa Wright Nature Centre.

What new sustainability steps or initiatives do you plan to take next?

We look to support conservation in every trip we offer. We stay at organization or community housing in Uganda, Southern Ecuador, Northern Peru, Guyana and more. Our donations to friends groups goes along with our entrance to public lands on our US trips, and we always keep our eyes peeled to support conservation issues close to our heart.
