Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

From May 2018, we are donating $5 (per person) for each holiday sold using Druk Air/Bhutan Airlines flights and $5 (per person) for each international flights; The collected amount will be used in planting trees/bamboos in the selected deforested areas of Bhutan to encourage more birds and wildlife. Our goal is to make all our tours Carbon Neutral. We are also the only local company in Bhutan who provide boiled drinking water on all our tours and avoid using the commercial packaged water to cut down the use of plastic bottles.

How does the tour support local people?

All our holidays are committed to responsible tourism in Bhutan. Through our in-depth knowledge of the country we ensure your stay is socially, culturally and environmentally friendly.

We fully support the country’s policy of low volume and impact but high quality product and understand that local communities should benefit from our holidays, whilst respecting local traditions and the heritage of Bhutan. Finally, we believe that we should help protect the environment and minimise pollution that may be caused by the holiday. Therefore with this in mind we are:

  • Using the local communities eco camps for some of our tours
  • Increasing the number of cultural trips organised in conjunction with local communities in Bhutan in order to provide insight into their everyday lives and culture while enabling money to be put directly into these communities.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

Each year, we train selected local guides to become a naturalist/bird watching guides by taking them on tours across the country.

My most memorable moment was getting clear views of the extremely shy Gould’s shortwing. This tour company stands out for its well-organised and knowledgeable guides and its en route accompanying catering team, thus maximising time spent birding. Bhutan is well worth a visit. It is a very peaceful and beautiful country and the birding and photographic opportunities are wide and varied. Highly recommended.

My most memorable moments were the observations of a number of birding highlights including ibisbill, beautiful nuthatch and Ward`s trogon, as well as the elation in the group at having accomplished these milestone sightings. We realised that it was above all the achievement of the tour leader, Chubzang Tangbi, giving space to experience bird sightings as our own ‘work’.

Chubzang Tangbi is a kind, very knowledgeable and sharp-eyed bird guide, being able to discern seemingly every bird within the group’s reach and point it out to every participant. He operates in a quiet and prudent way, instructing participants to behave likewise, thus optimizing opportunities for bird observation and minimizing impact on surrounding nature. Chubzang acted as an able intermediate between the group and local people we encountered. There was good attention for cultural aspects of Bhutan.

My 2012 tour was very well organized and executed by Langur Eco Travels using nice lodges and camps in attractive locations throughout the country. Without hesitance I would, and actually did, recommend the bird tours in Bhutan as organized by Langur Eco Travels.

Our local birding guide, Sonam, worked tirelessly to get us on the beautiful nuthatch. Over several days, we had birded without success all the most likely areas to view the bird. Late one afternoon as we were about to leave the bird’s range, our guide made a stop along the road. We walked for some distance down the road when Sonam heard the call of the beautiful nuthatch. He played a recording and managed to bring two of the birds within close range. We enjoyed great views and saw why it is called the “beautiful” nuthatch.

Our birding guide is an excellent local birder and worked very hard to get us on as many Bhutan species as possible. He also is very familiar with the local flora and fauna. We saw all the species of langurs, several species of orchids, and many varieties of rhododendrons. Other highlights included a tour of the largest dzong in Bhutan and a trek to Eagles Nest Monastery. Breakfasts and lunches were fabulous – local foods prepared and served by a local chef and his three assistants. At the appropriate times, we would round a corner and find a formal table setting located on a mountainside at cloud level with magnificent views of the Himalayas.

If you’re considering this tour, go, go now while the country is still relatively unspoiled by throngs of tourists. Bhutan is a beautiful country with a rich culture rooted in Buddhism. Take a little time to enjoy and learn about local customs. Birding is fabulous with many endemic species. The satyr tragopan, monal, Ward’s trogon and beautiful nuthatch are amongst the most beautiful birds you will see anywhere. If you visit in April-May, you can see the mountainsides abloom with rhododendrons. Before you leave the country, do the trek to Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Enjoy the murals on the walls depicting the life and teachings of the Buddha.

The birdlife and scenery in Bhutan are amazingly beautiful! We had an excellent bird guide who did his best to show all birds to us. The arrangement and service offered by Langur Eco Travels is comfortable and remarkable.
