Overview

TREE’s mission is simple: Conservation Through Exploration.

We specialize in three things. First and foremost we take people into the heart of tropical rainforest ecosystems. Second, we immerse in the cultures of Belize, Guyana, and Jamaica. Lastly, we promote conservation and sustainable living through experiential education and supporting local protected areas. In order to get the most out of these experiences we constantly push individuals to step outside of their comfort zone and embrace the area beyond, a place we refer to as the “magic zone.”

If you are able step outside of that familiar comfort zone amazing experiences await – experiences that cannot happen unless you make the conscious effort to get uncomfortable. Contrary to how it sounds, being uncomfortable will actually lead to a more enjoyable trip – and might possibly make your TREE expedition a defining event in your life. While accommodations themselves are quite comfortable, our approach to the forest will still prepare you to be able to sleep on any surface, sit near any giant insect, hike through any terrain, deal with any heat or humidity, and truly enjoy yourself in the forest. If you are able to get to this level then you will also be able to experience the true ecosystems and cultures of whichever CARICOM nation you are in.

With deep exposure to both the natural environments and cultures of these countries, and informal discussions led by TREE staff, you will gain experiential knowledge without the need for a formal setting. The forest becomes a classroom. Cultural activities become recess. And you leave with a better understanding of the challenges and the best paths forward for conservation and sustainability.

If that occurs, mission completed.

Ethics

At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help conserve the environment, support local people and provide educational opportunities for guests and staff, or be actively working to improve in these areas.

What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?

ALL places we stay are locally owned and benefit the people – the majority of places we stay are within protected areas and us staying there helps to directly contribute to conservation. We pay into the Protected Areas Conservation Trust and the Forest User Fee goes to funding monitoring to keep protection of the protected areas legitimate.

We source sustainable food whenever possible, from locally caught fish (caught within the protocols of sustainability i.e. fished by Indigenous people and using single lines without boats instead of nets) to locally produced vegetables.

We also engage in conservation discussions, hands-on demonstrations, up-close looks at reduced impact logging sites and aim for guests to leave with a better understanding of conservation and sustainability to then apply it to their daily lives back home.

How does the tour support local people?

ALL tours taken, places we stay in and food we consume is locally owned and/or operated.

What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?

Tropical forest ecology education, fish identification and marine conservation education, a focus on wider sustainability issues such as plastic consumption and energy, and a species identification list which has proven to be a great way to stay engaged and really bring back the purpose and meaning of the trips.

If you want a once in a lifetime adventure, along with challenging your comfort zone, learning more about ecotourism and getting a more genuine taste of local culture, I highly recommend going on a TREE trip. I had the chance to do just that across a week in Guyana with Jordan and am so glad I did. It was something I’d never experienced before and I would definitely do it again. For example, sleeping in hammock in a jungle was something that was way more comfortable than I had envisioned, and I also made some incredible friendships during my time there! Jordan is incredibly passionate and chill, great vibes all around – thanks again mate 🙂

Last Spring, me and my best friend headed to Central America on the trip of a lifetime. We literally didn’t have to worry about a thing. Jordan planned our flights, our buses, our boats and all our travel needs. Being with him made you feel safe in such a distant country. He knew all the local hotspots and was able to guide us through many jungles, off the beaten path, to see treasures we may have not seen if we were to take a more “Americanized” tour. We had our own private guide who knew the jungle and the islands like his own backyard. He was also able teach us a great amount about the culture and the environment of the places we had visited. Would definitely recommend to a friend!

Jordan will instantly connect with you, and then connect you to the locals and the environment. He totally makes you feel at ease… you’ll feel like you’re traveling with your best friend while learning about all the local ecology and nature. The places he takes you aren’t your typical tourist spots. So if you’re ready to experience the REAL Caribbean… go with TREE. I highly recommend it.

Trip of a lifetime’ ‘local experiences’ and ‘super informative’ are some of the thoughts you can walk away with from a TREE experience. TREE is great with planning fantastic excursions while also taking advantage of spontaneous things that unfold on the fly. If you are into learning about the local culture and history, or just want to explore nature, TREE will defiantly accommodate. I would highly recommend taking a trip with this organization. The few extra bucks for a TREE trip vs your own not only contributes to conservation, but will give you a deeper understanding of the country you visit and make lifelong memories that you wont forget!

Two friends and I went down to Belize on a TREE trip earlier this year. Jordan took us hiking through the jungle to amazing secluded waterfalls and cliff jumping that only the locals knew about. He also took us to the tops of Mayan pyramids and snorkelling with turtles, all kinds of fish, and even sharks. Throughout our trip, Jordan impressed us with his knowledge of the forests, the surrounding countryside, the animals, the geopolitical climate of the region, the fish, and the environmental problems of the region, all while making us feel like we were on vacation and having discussions with one of our oldest friends. I would highly recommend booking a trip with TREE to anyone who enjoys the outdoors and actually wants to get out of the resort and enjoy the countryside like the locals do.
