At Terra Incognita we support tours that do good in the world. They must help to conserve the environment, support local people, and educate their guests. Here’s what Barry Walker from Manu Expeditions Birding and Wildlife Tours said to us…
What conservation activities do you support through the tour, and your wider operations?
We use conservation NGO lodges and offer hands on conservation support. Our staff members ( tour leaders principally make regular lectures to young Peruvians on environmental education good practices and sustainable tourism.
We have been instrumental in the foundation of and promotion of http://www.ecoanperu.org/ and helped one of our ex leaders Constantino Aucca to form this organization finding their first funding etc and generally pausing Constantino in the right direction. We are also corporate supporters of the Neotropical Bird Club and run some of their conservation fund raising tours.
How does the tour support local people?
All our staff, guides drivers, field chefs and lodge staff are local Peruvians.
What type of environmental education activities do you incorporate into your tour?
During birding sessions we elaborate on conservation status and threats to species and their habitats.
Manu Expeditions Birding and Wildlife Tours absolute commitment to environmental and historical education, to hiring local guides and drivers throughout the country (including the entire staff at the Manu Biological Station), and continuing efforts to work with local conservation efforts for habitat preservation to benefit many avian species of high priority is fabulous.
A favourite moment from a trip was visiting the high elevation habitats of Abra Malaga, and learning about the wonderful conservation efforts to re-establish Polylepis forests throughout the region for the benefit of a myriad of highly endangered birds.
DO IT and you will never regret the experience to REALLY see and understand Peru, the culture, and the incredible natural habitats that will be visited! Dave Krueper, Manu, Maranon (northern Peru), and custom tour (Peru) 2003, 2005, 2016.
